Milwaukee School of Engineering - Summer 2008 Research Opportunity for
Undergraduates
Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is seeking
college students to participate in an innovative research program that focuses on
solid freeform applications in the aerospace, architectural, biomedical,
biomolecular, manufacturing and electronics industries from June 1 through August 9 2008. We are seeking
undergraduates from engineering, computer science and science-based
curriculums.
Solid Freeform Fabrication (SFF) is an important developing technology that
enables the fabrication of custom objects with novel properties directly from
computer data. The basic operation of any SFF system consists of slicing a 3-D
computer model into thin cross sections, translating the result into 2-D position
information, and using this data to control the placement of solid material. This
process is repeated for each cross section and the object is built up one layer at
a time. The additive nature of SFF techniques offers great promise for producing
objects with unique material combinations and geometries which could not be
attained by traditional manufacturing methods. The MSOE Rapid Prototyping Center is
the only university that has a laboratory devoted to all five
commercially-available rapid prototyping systems - stereolithography (SLA),
laminated object manufacturing (LOM), selective laser sintering (SLS), fused
deposition modeling (FDM), Z-Corp processing.
Eligibility: To be considered students must have completed their sophomore year
of an engineering, pre-engineering, computer science or science (physics, chemistry,
biology, etc) based curriculum; be enrolled in a university for the fall term; and
be a full-time student with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or greater. Applicants must
be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Women, minorities and
individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply. No experience in rapid
prototyping is required.
To apply, send the following information to Ann Bloor, MSOE, 1025 N. Broadway,
Milwaukee, WI 53202. Application materials must be
received by Monday, March 10, 2008. Only complete applications will be

Service Opportunities
Opportunities for Student Leaders Offered Through Student Leaders for Service and Activism (SLSA):
Student Leaders for Service and Activism (SLSA), coordinated and sponsored by the Service-Learning Initiative, offers students an opportunity to develop leadership skills and provide community service in an area related to their career or personal interests. What is SLSA? SLSA is a student organization providing opportunities for ongoing volunteer activity at a variety of sites in the Columbus community and for development and demonstration of leadership skills. Students joining SLSA provide volunteer service in a community site or, if selected as a Site Liaison, coordinate OSU volunteer activities at a community site. Training offered to SLSA members through the Service-Learning Initiative empowers students to take lead roles in providing volunteer service or coordinating volunteer service provided by OSU students. Students who affiliate with SLSA as volunteers may be on the front lines of the agency doing direct service work such as reading to or tutoring elementary school students while others learn the more intricate details of running a non-profit agency through projects such as mailings, phone calls and hands-on, behind-the-scenes work. Sites for the 2005-2006 academic year included On My Own, an organization working with developmentally disabled adults; Columbus Public Schools; Franklin County Board of Elections; International Neighborhood Coffee Hour; The Unverferth House; and The Godman Guild. Students selected as site liaisons may arrange to earn academic credit through independent study or internship or to voluntarily give their time. Benefits of serving as a site liaison include the following:
∙ Site liaisons develop leadership skills as they learn to plan and lead discussion sessions for student volunteers, encouraging students to make connections between their volunteer activities and societal issues.
∙ Site Liaisons receive in-depth training and come out of the program as strong community leaders.
∙ Site liaisons develop skills in effective community participation, learning through their experiences while working as a bridge between OSU and the community,
∙ Site liaisons have the advantage of meeting outstanding campus and community partners and creating an expansive network of friends, professors and mentors.
∙ Site liaisons commit 8 to10 hours per week, recruiting, orienting and appreciating OSU student volunteers; meeting with SLSA coordinator to discuss goals, accomplishments and challenges at the site; attending team meetings (late afternoon or early evening), monitoring volunteer activity at their sites, and connecting with other student volunteers.
∙ Site liaisons receive a $200 stipend for books or school-related expenses.
Students who are selected as Site liaisons may also be assigned to support faculty teaching service-learning courses (contact Lisa Weiss at weiss.207@osu.edu or 292-7176 for more information). The site liaisons can be a beneficial resource for any faculty member who is looking for unique volunteer opportunities for students enrolled in service-learning courses or for faculty interested in developing a service-learning course. Site Liaisons can assist faculty in a variety of ways, including introducing faculty members to an agency, talking to students about the benefits of working in partnership with a community agency, coordinating service activity at an agency, and assisting in analysis of learning and/or impact of service. Kylie Opelt, founding member of SLSA, reflected on her participation as a site liaison: Being involved in the SLSA program allowed me to really make a difference in others’ lives while continuing to develop my leadership and organizational skills. SLSA is a great way to meet new people, build skills, and give back to the community. For further information, contact: Lisa Weiss, Coordinator, Student Leaders for Service and Activism at the Service-Learning Initiative, at weiss.207@osu.edu or 292-7176 for more information.
