All Students / Grades (K-12)School Visits If your school is located in Central Ohio, representatives from the OSU College of Engineering, along with current engineering students, will visit your school and talk to students (male and female) about engineering. Although we do talk about Ohio State, our visit focuses on engineering and career opportunities for engineers. Each visit is catered to our audience and allotted time: we can talk to any age group and can do anything from a 30 minute interactive chat to a two hour hands-on workshop. If a hands-on workshop is requested, we do require the requesting school or organization to cover the cost of materials and supplies. Girl Scout Days Girl Scout Days are workshops sponsored by Women in Engineering in which Girl Scouts of all ages are invited to experience engineering first-hand. Through tours, group work, and engineering activities, the participants learn about the fields of math and science and have a glimpse of what it means to be an engineer. The OSU Women in Engineering Program hosts Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day annually for girls in 3rd, 4th, 5th, & 6th grade who want to learn more about the fascinating world of engineering. The 2008 event will be held Saturday, April 19. Participants have fun learning about engineering by doing hands-on activities and will hear from engineering students and industry professionals about what you can do with an education in engineering. On-line registration will begin February 1, 2008. Return to top Middle School Age (Grades 6-8) Camp Engineer Camp Engineer is a one-week day camp that seeks to provide middle school girls with a more in depth exposure, understanding, and appreciation of engineering. During the week, students work on design projects as well as participate in engineering department tours and workshops that help introduce them to specific engineering disciplines. Various College of Engineering faculty, staff members, and graduate students work with the young women to highlight and teach essential engineering concepts. Young Women's Summer Institute The Young Women's Summer Institute (YWSI) is designed for current 6th and 7th grade girls to have fun, meet new friends, and learn science and computer skills. YWSI is a week-long program sponsored by Ohio Supercomputer Center for middle-school girls in Ohio. It is designed to promote computer, math, and science skills as well as provide hands-on experiences. YWSI helps girls develop an interest in these subjects by allowing them to work on a practical, interesting scientific problem using the latest computer technology. Future Engineers’ Summer Camp (FESC) The Future Engineers’ Summer Camp, typically held in August, is a program designed for female students who will enter the 8th grade in the following academic year. This week-long day camp is held at The Ohio State University. Established to generate excitement and enthusiasm in engineering and science, participants will explore concepts of engineering and science. The program emphasizes exploring and experiencing rather than watching and listening. The Breakfast of Science Champions offers middle school students the opportunity to explore science, math and engineering at The Ohio State University during a special program designed especially for them. Students spend a morning on campus, where they meet faculty and graduate students from the sciences, mathematics and engineering while enjoying a continental breakfast. They can ask questions, and learn about career opportunities and attending college. Students then tour labs and participate in a variety of demonstrations. At the end of the school year, participants are invited back to campus for a "virtual conference." Utilizing video technology, students at several different locations around campus are able to communicate with each other and present their experiences. Return to top ACCAD Summer Workshope for Girls Digital Animation: A Technology Mentoring Program for Young Women is a free, two-week summer experience for high school girls at Ohio State. Students work with women mentors at the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design and investigate technology through the creative applications of computer-generated animation and Web media. The program is open to girls currently in or entering grades 8 or 9. Please see http://accad.osu.edu/womenandtech/ for more information. Day on Campus High school women interested in studying engineering at Ohio State can come spend the day with women engineering students, attending a class, touring campus and engineering labs, and speaking to faculty and students. If you have a student that is interested in participating, contact Glenda La Rue at la-rue.10@osu.edu Engineering Explorers Engineering Explorers is a career education program for high school girls and boys. Exploring is run through the school year and consists of evening visits to the OSU main campus once a month. This program is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth and organizations throughout the community. Engineering Explorers provides students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the engineering field. Youth will engage in a program of activities which will encourage personal and career development. Engineering Explorers provides the ability for students to build relationships with working professionals in the engineering field and experience positive leadership from adult mentors. http://eng-exploring.blogspot.com/ Engineering Summer Academy The Engineering Summer Academy is a three-week program at Ohio State for students who have completed 11th grade (junior year of high school), allowing them to receive college credit. During the program, the students (male and female) will design documentation and standards using manual and CADD/Inventor techniques. They will receive an introduction to 3-dimensional orthographic and pictorial visualization and presentation. The seventy-two hours of classroom and laboratory instruction will give the students credit for Engineering H191, equivalent to four quarter hours of undergraduate credit at Ohio State or for potential transfer credit at other institutions. This program is typically held the third week of June each year on the OSU main campus. The program introduces participants to fundamental skills that improve their chances for success in engineering courses and their future careers through hands-on activities. Students are required to stay on campus during this week and housing is provided at no cost. Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) is now administering SEAP,
sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (ONR). SEAP is an eight week summer research
opportunity at participating ONR laboratories for high school student who have
completed at least grade 9, must be 16 years of age for most Laboratories, and a U.S.
citizen. A graduating Senior is eligible to apply. The stipend for the summer program
is $1,500 for new students; $1,550 for returning students. The application is currently
open and must be completed by January 28, 2008. Stone Laboratory Come take part in a workshop for high school teachers and high school students. Live and learn at the Stone Laboratory, the oldest freshwater field station, and research laboratory in the US. See the website www.sg.ohio-state.edu for course descriptions and dates. We offer courses for college students, high school students and educators. Our summer courses include both 1 week and 5 week sessions. Courses at the 500 and 600 level normally require at least 15 quarter hours of biological sciences. Information on Prerequisites can be obtained by calling the Stone Laboratory office. Courses offered during first term are not prerequisites for second-term courses. Individual Studies (293 and 693), Thesis Research (998), or Dissertation Research (999) may be taken in addition to the regular course load. Introductory courses (107, 110, 125, 126) have no prerequisites and are available to college and select high school students. Summer Honors Institute for Gifted Students The Engineering Summer Institute is a week long, resident program primarily targeting gifted high school students (male and female) who have completed 10th grade (sophomore year of high school) and are interested in engineering. Eligible students are Ohio residents who have been designated as "gifted." This course will provide the Gifted Student the opportunity to be introduced to the fundamentals of engineering. While the focus will be on robotics, the course will introduce the student to the various engineering disciplines, the engineering design process, team-working skills, engineering drawing and communications, elements of problem solving with computers, simple programming elements and logic, and engineering professionalism and ethics. Summer Workshop The Summer Workshop is a one-week residency program funded by WiE’s corporate sponsors. Women entering Ohio State in Autumn with a major in Engineering are eligible to spend the week at OSU learning all about engineering and the campus. This workshop gives the women an opportunity to meet other women who will be studying engineering at Ohio State in the autumn, live in the dorm, meet engineering faculty, learn about the different engineering programs, work in groups on engineering experiments, get to know the OSU campus, and have fun! The program is divided into two major components. The first is a six-week academic component in which participants attend classes while living on campus. The second is a six-week work component in which participants work with professional engineers on challenging technical assignments.
